Nigerian Catholic Bishops to Meet New Pope in Rome for Ad Limina Visit in March 2026

Catholic bishops in Nigeria have secured a schedule to travel to Rome for an official Ad Limina visit with the new Pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost, in March 2026. The announcement was made by the Catholic Bishop of Yola, Most Reverend Stephen Mamza, during a press briefing on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 01:20 PM WAT, as part of the 2025 Communication Week of the Catholic Church.

Bishop Mamza revealed that the bishops received confirmation of the visit over the weekend. “It was just yesterday we got a message of our Ad Limina,” he stated, explaining that the Ad Limina visit allows bishops from around the world to meet with the Pope. “The new Pope has just approved our Ad Limina visit by March next year.

All the Catholic bishops in Nigeria will be in Rome for two weeks in March next year,” he added. During the visit, each bishop will have a one-on-one interaction with Pope Prevost, lasting between 10 and 15 minutes. Mamza expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting, “We are privileged. Nigeria is one of the first countries that the Pope has approved the Ad Limina visit.”

The press briefing also coincided with the Catholic Church’s 2025 World Communication Week, themed “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts.” Addressing the theme, Bishop Mamza emphasized the message of “Hope,” urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the country’s challenging economic conditions. He called on citizens to extend love and goodwill to their neighbors, fostering a sense of hope amid widespread hardship. “The austere economy has foisted hopelessness on the country, but we must share hope with gentleness,” Mamza remarked.
