Tanzania closes Nduta camp housing thousands of Burundi refugees Tanzania has closed a camp housing thousands of Burundian refugees and repatriated all but a handful, activists and the United Nations said. Burundian refugees have complained in recent months of being forcibly evicted from the Nduta camp in northwestern Tanzania, following a deal between the governments in Dar Es Salaam and Bujumbura to repatriate around 100,000 of them by June. As of late 2025, there were an estimated 142,000 Burundian refugees housed in two Tanzanian camps - Nduta and Nyarugusu, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). Ukrainian Ground Forces Commander Resigns After Deadly Russian Strike

Kyiv, June 1, 2025 – General Mykhailo Drapatyi, Commander of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, announced his resignation following a devastating Russian missile strike on a military training camp in the Kharkiv region. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, killed 12 Ukrainian soldiers and wounded over 60 others, marking a significant blow to Ukraine’s military.

Drapatyi cited the lethal strike as the reason for his departure, stating, “Circular responsibility and impunity are poison for the army. I tried to eradicate them.”

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its Iskander-M ballistic missile system targeted a Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) training position near Chuguyev’s military airfield. The strike reportedly destroyed six UAV launchers, eight motor vehicles, and approximately 30 kamikaze drones, though Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the extent of the damage.

The attack has raised questions about security lapses, with critics pointing to the concentration of troops near the Russian border, where drone activity is frequent. Ukraine’s National Guard confirmed the strike occurred during a training exercise, intensifying scrutiny of command decisions. An investigation into possible negligence is underway as Ukraine grapples with escalating Russian assaults.
