Wike Denies Rift with Fubara, Opposes State of Emergency in Rivers State

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims of a personal conflict with Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, while also distancing himself from President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State. Wike made these remarks during a press conference in Abuja on Monday at 01:05 PM WAT.

Addressing journalists, Wike accused Fubara of allowing himself to be manipulated by adversaries in their fight against him. “I don’t have any crisis with him (Fubara),” Wike stated. “Rather, the governor, unknown to me, gave himself to be the tool for those who couldn’t fight me to fight me.” He described the ongoing turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the work of “undertakers,” attributing the crisis to Fubara’s actions.

Wike also clarified his stance on the State of Emergency in Rivers State, which was declared by President Tinubu. “I’m not the President who declared a State of Emergency; if Mr. President had called me, I wouldn’t have agreed to it,” he said. The FCT Minister emphasized that he never supported the declaration, though he noted it may have been intended to protect Fubara from impeachment. “What I said was that the declaration of State of Emergency was to save the governor because he was almost impeached,” Wike added.

The Minister further stated that he was unaware of the President’s plans, saying, “He knows when to lift [the emergency]; he has everything on his table, I don’t know.” The political tensions in Rivers State continue to draw attention as stakeholders navigate the fallout from the emergency declaration and the internal dynamics within the PDP.
