Gaza ceasefire negotiations stall after Israel recalls negotiators

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Israel is recalling its negotiators from Doha following new demands from Hamas in response to the latest Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal proposal. This move comes amid ongoing efforts to finalize a 60-day ceasefire, with White House envoy Steve Witkoff currently in Italy for talks with Qatari and Israeli officials, hoping to proceed to Doha to seal the agreement.

An Israeli official explained that the recall is intended to “shake up” the negotiations and apply additional pressure on Hamas to accept the current proposal, which includes the release of 10 live hostages and 18 deceased hostages. Despite the recall, Israeli officials emphasize that the talks have not collapsed, though it remains unclear if this will cause a significant pause. The breakdown followed Hamas’s demand to increase the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released in exchange for hostages, a move that angered Israeli officials and was discouraged by Qatari mediators. Netanyahu’s office acknowledged the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and Witkoff in trying to achieve progress, but said further consultations are needed before negotiations resume.
