His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, has expressed deep concern over the rising rate of ethical breaches within the legal profession, as he described it as shameful and troubling.
He shed light on a disturbing case currently before the General Legal Council. Speaking at the commissioning of the Moot Court facility at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School on Monday, July 21.
He said, “Just as you feel disgusted by students dressing shabbily to come to school, you must be wondering how a lawyer manages to pass through the school.”
“I happen to be the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council, and the sort of infractions and ethical breaches that appear before us make you wonder where the world is heading.”
Citing a shocking example, he acting CJ talked about a lawyer who allegedly stole a colleague’s mobile phone at the Tema Court, a case that is now under investigation by the Council.
This, he noted, is part of a broader concern about professional conduct in Ghana’s legal system.
