Man allegedly built and hid homemade bombs across New York City, prosecutors say

A New York City man has been indicted for allegedly plotting to detonate homemade explosives he reportedly stashed at multiple locations throughout Manhattan, federal prosecutors announced.

Michael Gann, 55, is accused of assembling at least seven improvised explosive devices last month using chemicals he purchased online in May. According to the indictment returned by a grand jury on Tuesday, Gann placed some of the devices on the rooftops of connected residential buildings and threw another onto subway tracks near the Williamsburg Bridge. Authorities said no one was harmed by the devices. Gann was arrested in early June near the sites, and officials found one of the bombs in his possession.

Jay Clayton, the interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, condemned Gann’s actions, saying he “put countless lives at risk.” Gann faces charges including attempted destruction of property by explosives, transporting explosive materials, and illegal possession of destructive devices. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 40 years in prison. A judge has ordered Gann to be held without bail. His attorney declined to comment.
