Busta Rhymes' former assistant has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the rapper of physical assault and workplace abuse, alleging a pattern of violent behavior and labor violations. The civil complaint, filed late Monday by Dashiel Gables in the Eastern District of New York, claims the rapper — whose legal name is Trevor Smith Jr. — punched him in the face during an argument in the lobby of Rhymes' Brooklyn residence. The January incident reportedly began when Gables briefly responded to a text from his daughter, prompting Rhymes to scream, “stay the fuck off your phone” before striking him twice in the face. Gables says he was later hospitalized and filed a police report, which led to Rhymes being charged with three counts of assault.
The lawsuit goes on to describe an abusive work environment, alleging Rhymes frequently spat at, slapped, and physically grabbed staff, including Gables. He also claims he was denied overtime pay and was subjected to homophobic slurs and threats, including being told his face would be "bloodied." Gables alleges he earned a flat $200 daily rate and worked from the time Rhymes woke up until he went to bed. After the assault, Gables says he was fired and blacklisted from the hip-hop industry, losing access to the relationships he had built over the years. Neither Rhymes’ representatives nor Gables’ attorney responded to requests for comment. Rhymes has previously faced legal troubles, including a 2015 arrest for throwing a drink at a gym employee and a 2023 incident where he was caught on video throwing a beverage at a woman who groped him. Despite his legal controversies, the rapper was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and made a cameo in the upcoming sequel to “The Naked Gun.”
