Five people died after a cable snapped on a suspension bridge in China’s Xinjiang region, causing them to fall from the bridge, according to state media Xinhua. The accident occurred around 6:18 p.m. Wednesday in a sightseeing area within the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Twenty-four others were injured in the incident.
The scenic area has been closed while authorities investigate. Social media videos confirmed by Reuters show the suspension bridge leaning to one side with damaged handrails hanging between the walkway and the ground below, which includes a river. Some videos show injured individuals lying beneath the bridge, and others being carried away on makeshift stretchers.
The site, known as Xiata, covers about 65 square kilometers and features natural landscapes such as a mountain pass, a valley, and a river, along with cultural landmarks including ancient town ruins. The central government has deployed a task force to the scene to supervise the investigation and coordinate care for the wounded.
