Jim Iyke Sparks Controversy with Claim That Single Mothers Cannot Raise Proper Men

Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has ignited a heated debate with his recent statement asserting that single mothers are incapable of raising “proper men.” The controversial remark, made during an interview on a popular Lagos-based podcast on Sunday, August 17, 2025, has drawn sharp reactions from fans, activists, and social commentators across Nigeria.

Speaking on the podcast 'Real Talk Naija', Iyke argued that the absence of a father figure in a household led by a single mother often results in men who lack certain qualities he deems essential for masculinity. “It’s a tough truth, but single mothers, no matter how strong, cannot fully raise proper men. A boy needs a man’s guidance to navigate life’s complexities,” Iyke stated, emphasizing the importance of male role models in shaping character and discipline.

The actor’s comments have sparked widespread backlash, particularly on social media platforms, where many criticized his remarks as insensitive and dismissive of the efforts of single mothers. Women’s rights groups, including the Nigerian Women’s Empowerment Network, condemned Iyke’s statement, calling it a “gross generalization” that undermines the resilience and capabilities of single mothers. “Millions of single mothers in Nigeria raise successful, well-rounded men despite immense challenges. Such remarks are unfair and perpetuate harmful stereotypes,” said Funmi Adebayo, a spokesperson for the group.

Supporters of Iyke, however, argue that his comments were taken out of context and reflect his personal perspective on the importance of balanced parental influence. Some fans defended the actor, citing cultural and societal expectations around gender roles in Nigeria as the basis for his opinion.

In response to the backlash, Iyke’s management issued a statement on Monday, August 18, 2025, clarifying that the actor’s comments were not intended to disparage single mothers but to highlight the challenges of parenting in the absence of a father figure. “Jim Iyke acknowledges the incredible strength of single mothers and regrets any misunderstanding caused by his statement. His point was to spark a conversation about the societal roles of both parents,” the statement read.

The controversy has reignited discussions about parenting, gender roles, and the challenges faced by single mothers in Nigeria, where economic pressures and societal stigma often compound their struggles. Public figures, including fellow Nollywood stars, have weighed in, with some urging Iyke to apologize and others calling for a broader dialogue on family dynamics.

As the debate continues, Iyke has yet to personally address the criticism, leaving many to wonder whether he will double down on his stance or offer a public apology to quell the growing outrage.
