Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has resumed training after his release from prison in Mexico, as he awaits trial on allegations of ties to a criminal cartel following his deportation from the United States.
Video shared on social media by the Coliseo Boxing Club in Hermosillo, operated by boxer Gallo Estrada, showed Chavez Jr. working on a punching bag while wearing a gym-branded t-shirt. The gym thanked him for visiting, posting on Instagram: “Thanks for your visit. This is your home.” The gym confirmed to Reuters that Chavez Jr. trained at the facility on Monday afternoon.
Chavez Jr., 39, the son of legendary former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, was freed over the weekend by a local judge in northern Sonora state, who allowed him to continue the legal process outside of detention. Mexican prosecutors allege he acted as a henchman for the Sinaloa Cartel, designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. earlier this year, though his family and lawyers reject the claims.
He faces charges in Mexico related to arms trafficking and organized crime, according to statements from the president of Mexico, following his arrest by U.S. immigration authorities in Los Angeles last month. Chavez Jr.’s arrest came shortly after he lost a high-profile fight against American influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. After being deported to Mexico, he was taken into custody by local authorities and briefly jailed in Hermosillo.
