NRC Managing Director Apologizes for Assault on Journalist Covering Train Derailment

Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), issued a public apology to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Chapter, for assaulting Ladi Bala, a journalist with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), during coverage of the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday at the NUJ FCT secretariat in Abuja, Opeifa expressed regret for his actions, attributing them to the heat of the moment. “I wish to offer my apology for the regrettable remarks I made, which were not only directed at a seasoned journalist but also reflected unfavourably on the NUJ FCT and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ,” he stated. “Acting under pressure to ensure safety, I made unkind statements. I take full responsibility and am sorry.”

The apology follows a strong condemnation by the NUJ FCT, which demanded a public apology for the mistreatment of its members covering the derailment incident. NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, urged journalists to remain calm in response to the incident.

The Abuja-Kaduna train derailment, which occurred in Jere on Tuesday, left six passengers injured, prompting heightened media coverage and scrutiny.
