Three boys were injured in a stabbing at Carrick High School in Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning, and a male student was taken into custody.
Emergency responders arrived at the school around 8:30 a.m. after reports of an altercation that led to the attack. Two students were hospitalized with abdominal injuries, one in critical condition and the other stable. A third student sustained a minor cut and was treated at the scene. The victims were between 15 and 18 years old.
The 16-year-old suspect suffered a hand laceration and was treated before being taken to police headquarters. Authorities said a small knife was involved and that the incident began as a confrontation in a hallway, not a random attack.
Carrick High, which serves 549 students, has metal detectors at its entrances, though the suspect entered through the cafeteria because he arrived late. Officials are reviewing security protocols to determine how the weapon was brought into the building.
The school remained in a secure status for the rest of the day with outside doors locked. Superintendent Dr. Wayne N. Walters expressed concern for the injured students and their families, while Mayor Ed Gainey emphasized the need for community-wide efforts to ensure safety and support for young people.
