The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has revealed he is contemplating a run for the governorship, depending on the direction of his political party. Obasa made the disclosure during an interview on Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday, September 11, 2025, while discussing his political future.
Obasa, who previously served as a councillor before becoming Speaker, had earlier hinted that his next step could be a senatorial or gubernatorial position. When pressed on whether those ambitions remain, he affirmed they still exist but emphasized that any decision would hinge on consultations and the consensus of his party’s leadership. “Every politician has ambitions, but you reach a point where you cannot decide alone. In a party structure, it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s guidance,” Obasa stated.
The Speaker, who recently weathered a leadership crisis that temporarily saw him removed from his position, also indicated he is unlikely to seek re-election for a fifth term as a legislator. When asked about contesting again for the Assembly, he responded, “Not really,” suggesting a shift toward higher political aspirations.
Obasa underscored the importance of aligning personal goals with the broader strategy of his party, signaling that his next move will depend on its directives. As speculation grows about his potential governorship bid, political observers are closely watching developments within Lagos’ political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
