NUPENG PTD MEMBERS STAY AWAY DESPITE SCHEDULED MEETING WITH FG

Members of Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD Branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers, NUPENG have gone ahead to withdraw their services from Monday, September 8, over alleged anti-labour activities of Dangote group.

During a visit to PTD office on Monday morning, AIT crew found no official around except security personnel who denied them access into the building.

AIT also reached out to PTD tank farm along Kaduna road in Suleja where they were told the drivers did not turn up for work.

Meanwhile, NUPENG general secretary had shared a message saying quote "Tanker Drivers are set to start looking for new employment, new skills and new sources of income from tomorrow, 8th September 2025, end of quote.

At the moment a meeting called by the federal minister of labour and employment, Mohammed Dingyadi, originally  scheduled for 3PM this Monday, has been brought forward to 10am.

When AIT contacted NUPENG officials on  the development, one of them said they were still in Lagos, adding that they initially bought 1.20pm flight before the meeting was changed from 3.00 pm to 10.00 am

and as at that time they were yet to get seats for earlier flight.

In the meantime, petroleum retail outlets are still selling fuel because the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria, PETROAN had issued a statement in solidarity to withdraw its services from midnight of Tuesday September 9.

The bone of contention is that Dangote group is employing about 10,000 Tanker drivers and making them sign undertakings not to belong to any trade union, a development the PTD, NUPENG, NLC and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana has described as unconstitutional and a tramp on the drivers human and labour rights.
