Tanzania stepping up crackdown on critics after recent polls, UN warns Tanzania has stepped up its crackdown on opponents after contested elections in October that were marred by deadly violence, the United Nations warned Friday, AFP reported. Rights groups say more than 1,000 people were shot dead during three days of protests over elections on October 29 that the opposition and foreign observers describe as fraudulent. Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan retained the presidency with 98 percent of the vote, but the main opposition candidates were either jailed or disqualified.  Oncologists Urge FG to Financially Support Treatment of Cancer Patients

Some Oncologists want the Nigerian government to provide a dedicated fund to support Cancer patients, make radiation machines available and accessible for patients in order to save lives

The Oncologists who made the appeal during a News briefing in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, also advised Policy makers to provide needed facilities and environment to enable more Cancer patients to get access to quality and affordable treatments.

Medical reports have it that Nigeria records nearly 12,000 new Cancer cases are diagnosed annually, with over 7,000 lives lost each year.

The reality is that the health system in Nigeria has long been fragile with limited workforce, inadequate infrastructure, late diagnosis, and financial hardship for patients.

According to Oncologists, it's for such troubling reasons that they are urging the Federal and State governments to support Cancer patients.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that at least one Radiotherapy machine should be available for 20,000 populace, but that is far from the case  in Nigeria.

Health experts note that the cause of Cancer is multi factorial, but lifestyle modifications, regular physical exercise, a moderate BMI and avoidance of processed foods as well as early detection can at least reduce the risk of Cancer.
