Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have ended their engagement and broken off their five-year relationship, according to a person familiar with the matter. The decision was described as mutual, with both stars agreeing to part ways. The source spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the personal nature of the situation. People magazine first reported news of the split.
White, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in snowboarding, and Dobrev, best known for her role on The Vampire Diaries, made their relationship public in 2020 with a playful Instagram post showing Dobrev giving White a “quarantine haircut” during the early months of the pandemic. Over the years, the pair frequently supported one another’s careers, with Dobrev cheering White on during his run to the 2022 Beijing Olympics and White attending the premiere of Dobrev’s Netflix film The Out-Laws in 2023.
The couple announced their engagement in October 2024, sharing a romantic photo of White proposing at a New York restaurant, surrounded by rose petals and candles. As recently as August 31, the two were spotted together in public, but Dobrev attended the Toronto International Film Festival alone last week and was seen without her engagement ring.
Since retiring from competitive snowboarding after finishing fourth at the Beijing Games, White has focused on building The Snow League, a new professional halfpipe circuit designed to create more opportunities for athletes in the sport. Dobrev, meanwhile, is preparing to star in It Happened One Summer, a romantic comedy based on the bestselling novel by Tessa Bailey.
