Wike Hosts PDP Leaders in Abuja to Discuss Party’s Future Amid Controversy

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is currently hosting key leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Abuja to discuss the party’s challenges and chart a path forward. The meeting includes prominent figures such as PDP National Secretary Sam Anyanwu, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, Minority Leader of the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly Kingsley Chinda, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and other assembly members.

The gathering follows Wike’s recent warning that the PDP risks “self-destruction” if it attempts to re-admit former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike criticized the party for failing to learn from past mistakes that led to its defeat in the 2023 general elections. He specifically highlighted the PDP’s decision to allow both the presidential candidate and the national chairman to come from the North, a move he described as “unjust and politically suicidal.”

“From day one, I told my colleagues, PDP, you are shooting yourself. You cannot have the presidential candidate at the same time as the national chairman of the party,” Wike stated, accusing the party of ignoring calls for fairness and balance. He argued that this decision contributed significantly to the PDP’s electoral loss.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions within the PDP, particularly following Wike’s controversial demand for the dissolution of the South-east zonal executive, which the zone’s leadership rejected as “reckless and baseless.” As the party prepares for its national convention in November 2025, Wike’s latest remarks and the ongoing Abuja meeting underscore the deepening divisions within the PDP as it grapples with its future direction.
