Abia State Government Signs Tripartite Agreement for Ariaria Market Remodeling

The Abia State Government has signed a tripartite agreement with Check Best International Limited, the developer tasked with remodeling Section Two of Ariaria International Market in Aba, and representatives of the market’s Traders’ Union. The signing took place at Government House, Umuahia, marking a significant step toward upgrading the market to international standards.

Dr. Salome Obiukwu, the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, who signed on behalf of the state government, explained that a tripartite committee was established to oversee the remodeling process. She highlighted that the project would benefit traders and position Ariaria Market as a reference point for trade across Africa. Dr. Obiukwu urged the developer to maintain high-quality standards and announced that Governor Alex Otti would flag off the remodeling and reconstruction on October 30, 2025. She also called on traders to cooperate by relocating to a temporary market during the project’s duration.

Chief Nwaka Inem, Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce, and Industry, emphasized that the agreement followed extensive engagement with all parties involved. He underscored Governor Otti’s commitment to modernizing Abia’s economy and assured existing shop owners that they would receive shops at subsidized rates upon the project’s completion.

The Chairman of Ariaria International Market, Sir Hyacinth Nnabude, and former president, Mr. Chikadibia Ozoekwe, expressed the traders’ support for the project and gratitude to Governor Otti for his swift intervention to prevent the market’s collapse. They commended the efforts of Check Best International Limited’s MD/CEO in driving the initiative forward.
