Advocate Sentenced for Corruption After Offering NPA Official R50,000 Bribe

Advocate Phuthi Given Mothemane (38) has been sentenced by the Bellville Regional Court for corruption after offering a National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) official a R50,000 bribe. His sentencing on 20 October 2025 follows his conviction in June this year.

Mothemane received nine years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence, as well as three years of correctional supervision.

According to the Hawks, the case dates back to September 2022, when Mothemane attempted to bribe an NPA official to submit representations in favour of his client and make the State’s case disappear.

He was arrested in September 2023 by the Hawks’ Bellville-based Serious Corruption Investigation Unit after an extensive probe.

Authorities have welcomed the ruling as a strong message against corruption within the legal profession.
