LASODA ENGAGES MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT ON INCLUSION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES AT GRASSROOT

In a bid to deepen disability inclusion across all tiers of governance in Lagos State, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) paid an advocacy visit to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development on Monday.

Speaking during the visit, the General Manager of LASODA, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, emphasised the need for greater attention to disability issues at the local level.

She highlighted key areas including equitable employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), identifying types of disabilities and their respective clusters, and ensuring that care providers at the grassroots are equipped to support PWDs effectively.

Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal further stressed the importance of community-level engagement, calling for proactive inclusion efforts that would empower PWDs with the knowledge and tools required to contribute meaningfully to society.

She advocated for collaboration with traditional rulers and Community Development Associations (CDAs) to promote Agenda PLUS - the disability-focused initiative under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Responding, the elated Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, described the visit as timely and in alignment with the Ministry’s objectives for inclusive governance. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improving accessibility for PWDs across all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Mrs. Bolarinwa shared that her office recently intervened in an employment matter involving a deaf applicant at the Local Government Service Commission, ensuring equitable consideration. She reiterated that while employment decisions remain merit-based, inclusion and equal opportunity are non-negotiable.

Addressing the broader topic of community engagement, the Permanent Secretary advocated increased awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and promote understanding of disability issues. She pledged to work collaboratively with LASODA, LGAs, LCDAs, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that PWDs are not just represented but actively involved in community development initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to fostering a more inclusive Lagos where no one is left behind.
