AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

London police arrest asylum seeker mistakenly freed from prison

London police have arrested a convicted sex offender and asylum seeker who was mistakenly released from prison, in an error that has drawn sharp criticism of government procedures. Authorities said Ethiopian national Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu was taken into custody in the Finsbury Park area of north London. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that Kebatu will be deported as soon as possible.

Kebatu, who had previously made headlines after being arrested earlier this year for sexually assaulting a teenage girl, had been mistakenly released from a Chelmsford prison on Friday. Officials said he was incorrectly classified as due for routine release instead of being transferred to an immigration detention center. Kebatu had been sentenced in September to 12 months for multiple offenses, including assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Epping shortly after arriving in the U.K. by boat. The error triggered widespread concern, given his previous offenses, and led to thousands of protests against migrant housing across London and other cities, some involving far-right activists, while counterprotests were organized by anti-racism groups.

The Prison Service said a prison officer has been suspended pending investigation, while Justice Secretary David Lammy ordered immediate strengthening of prisoner release checks. Health Secretary Wes Streeting called the release a “serious failure,” noting Kebatu should have been transferred for deportation. The case has intensified debates over unauthorized migration, particularly the surge of more than 36,900 people crossing the English Channel this year, and criticism of government policies housing asylum seekers in hotels while awaiting decisions.
