Los Angeles Angels to name former catcher Kurt Suzuki as manager

The Los Angeles Angels have announced the hiring of former catcher Kurt Suzuki as their new manager. Suzuki, a 2014 All-Star who played for the Angels in 2021 and 2022, will succeed Ron Washington, who missed nearly half of the 2025 season following heart surgery.

Washington, 73, compiled a 135-189 record over his last two seasons with the Angels, including a 72-90 mark in 2025. He previously managed the Texas Rangers to a 664-611 record from 2007 to 2014, finishing his 10-year MLB managerial career with an overall 799-800 record. Suzuki, 42, enjoyed a 16-year playing career with a .255 batting average and 143 home runs, spending time with the Athletics, Nationals, Twins, Braves, and the Angels. He joined the Angels’ front office in 2023 as a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian and was teammates with current players, including Mike Trout, Jo Adell, Anthony Rendon, and Luis Renfigo, as well as former slugger Albert Pujols, who had also been considered for the managerial role. The Angels, who finished last in the American League West for a second straight season in 2025, have made the playoffs only once in the past 16 years.
