AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Meta to close desktop Messenger app

Meta is shutting down its Messenger app for macOS and Windows, directing users to the web instead. The app will be fully discontinued on December 15, after which Messenger chats can be accessed through the Facebook app on Windows or via the Facebook and Messenger websites.

Meta has not explained why it is ending the desktop apps. Users will receive a notification about the shutdown and will be blocked from accessing Messenger on desktops after the December 15 deadline.

To ensure chats are saved, users must enable secure storage and add a PIN code to their account. To archive conversations: click the gear icon above your profile picture, go to Privacy & Safety, select End-to-end encrypted chats, then click Message storage and make sure Turn on secure storage is toggled on.

Messenger was separated from Facebook in 2014 to provide a dedicated messaging experience. Meta later explored integrating Messenger with Instagram Direct Messaging but abandoned the effort in 2023. The desktop shutdown likely reflects user preference for mobile apps and web access over desktop software.
