AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. THE SUPREME COURT HAS RESERVED ITS JUDGEMENT REGARDING A LAWSUIT QUESTIONING PRESIDENT TINUBU'S MARCH DECLARATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RIVERS STATE.(PHOTO)

The Supreme Court has reserved its judgement regarding a lawsuit questioning President Tinubu's March declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

A panel of seven judges headed by Justice Inyang Okoro adjourned proceedings after the involved parties presented their cases on Tuesday. In this matter, the plaintiffs are the Attorneys General of 10 states, while the defendants are the Federal Government and the National Assembly.

In the proceedings of the day, the fifth plaintiff, Delta State, decided to withdraw from the lawsuit. This decision was not contested by Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the counsel representing the federal government.

Jegede (SAN), who served as the legal representative for the plaintiffs, emphasized that their case does not dispute the President's authority to declare a state of emergency. Instead, it questions the scope of this declaration, particularly concerning its impact on the positions of the governor, deputy governor, and the State House of Assembly.
