TROPICAL STORM MELISSA HEADS TOWARD CARIBBEAN . (PHOTO).

Tropical Storm Melissa heads toward Caribbean

Tropical Storm Melissa is targeting the Caribbean and could strengthen into a hurricane within the next 24 to 48 hours. The storm is not expected to threaten the U.S. mainland but poses the greatest risk to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica, where heavy rain and strong winds may trigger dangerous landslides.

Melissa is moving over unusually warm waters, 4 to 5 degrees above average, which could fuel its intensification. The storm is expected to approach Jamaica and southwestern Haiti later this week, bringing 5 to 10 inches of rain to the southern Dominican Republic, southern Haiti, and eastern Jamaica through Saturday, raising the risk of flash flooding and landslides. Northern Dominican Republic, northern Haiti, and western Jamaica could see 2 to 4 inches of rain, while Aruba and Puerto Rico may experience 1 to 3 inches from Melissa’s outer bands, with potential flooding. A hurricane watch is in effect for southwestern Haiti, from the Dominican border to Port-au-Prince, and a tropical storm watch has been issued for Jamaica. The Atlantic hurricane season continues through Nov. 30.
