AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Afghan national arrested in Texas over alleged bomb threat, DHS says

Homeland Security officials announced the arrest of an Afghan national accused of making a bomb threat tied to a social media post in Fort Worth, Texas. Authorities said Mohammad Dawood Alokozay was taken into custody Tuesday after allegedly posting online that he was “building a bomb” and threatening to blow up a building in the Fort Worth area. He was arrested on a state terror charge and is currently being held at a correctional facility in Tarrant County, according to court records. Officials said the arrest was carried out by the Texas Department of Public Safety and a joint terrorism task force.

The arrest came just one day before a separate and unrelated attack in Washington, D.C., in which two National Guard members were shot by another Afghan national, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal. One of the victims, U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, later died from her injuries, and Lakanwal now faces a first-degree murder charge. Authorities said immigration officials have also lodged a detainer against Alokozay as the investigation continues. No attorney information for him was immediately available.
