Raymond Boodarian, the 22-year-old charged with the handgun murders of American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca, has been ruled “not presently competent to stand trial,” a Los Angeles Superior Court judge announced Thursday. Judge Maria Cavalluzzi ordered Boodarian to be transferred to a state facility for treatment of his psychiatric condition, including the involuntary administration of psychotropic medication.
Boodarian, who refused to attend Thursday’s hearing, was arrested on July 16 for the July 10 shooting deaths of Kaye, 16, and her 70-year-old husband at their Encino home. During his August arraignment, he displayed “severe mental health issues,” appearing unresponsive and glassy-eyed to the court. Judge Cavalluzzi said the treatment is necessary to restore Boodarian’s ability to participate in his defense, citing the seriousness of the homicide case.
Boodarian faces murder charges, including special circumstance allegations for multiple murders and murder during the commission of a burglary, along with firearm charges, carrying potential sentences of life in prison or the death penalty. The LAPD discovered the victims’ bodies during a welfare check on July 14. No trial has been scheduled, and it remains uncertain if one will occur should Boodarian never be deemed competent. A follow-up hearing on his condition is set for December 19.
