A Florida man convicted of killing a woman during a home invasion robbery is scheduled for execution on Dec. 9, according to a death warrant signed Friday by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Mark Allen Geralds, 58, will be put to death by lethal injection at Florida State Prison. His execution would mark the 18th in Florida this year, surpassing any single-year total by a governor in the state since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The previous record was eight executions in 2014.
Gerald was sentenced to death in 1990 for the murder, armed robbery, burglary, and grand theft auto connected to the death of Tressa Pettibone. The Florida Supreme Court initially vacated his sentence but upheld the conviction, and he was resentenced to death in 1993. Pettibone was found beaten and stabbed to death in her Panama City home in February 1989 by her 8-year-old son. Geralds, who had previously done remodeling work at the home, knew the family’s schedule, including when Pettibone’s husband was away and when the children were at school. Investigators linked him to the crime through pawned jewelry with Pettibone’s blood and plastic ties matching those found in Gerald’s car.
Attorneys for Gerald are expected to pursue appeals with both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. Florida has led the nation in executions this year, with 41 carried out across the U.S. so far in 2025. Recent executions include Norman Mearle Grim Jr., who was put to death on Oct. 28 for the rape and murder of a neighbor.
