Former Vice President Dick Cheney dies at 84
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, widely regarded as one of the most politically influential vice presidents in U.S. history, has passed away at the age of 84.
Cheney’s family announced his death in a statement, saying he died on November 3, 2025, surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Lynne, their daughters Liz and Mary, and other family members. The former vice president’s death was attributed to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
Cheney spent nearly four decades in public service. He served as the youngest White House chief of staff under President Gerald Ford, represented Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he collaborated closely with congressional leaders and President Ronald Reagan, and held the role of secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush. He later served two terms as vice president under President George W. Bush. Cheney also led Halliburton, a global energy company, as its CEO.
During the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Cheney assumed control while President George W. Bush was away from Washington. In his memoir In My Time, Cheney recalled advising the president to remain out of the capital after the Pentagon was hit, emphasizing the White House was a potential target while ensuring the president could maintain leadership amid the crisis.
