AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Kaduna NYSC Member Issues Public Apology Over Controversial Comment About Teenage Female Students

Oyaje Daniel, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has issued a public apology following a controversial comment he made online two weeks ago regarding teenage students.

In the post, Daniel made a sexually inappropriate remark about his students, suggesting that he would engage in sexual relationships with them if given the opportunity.

In a statement, Daniel acknowledged that his comment, which he said was intended as a joke, was inappropriate and offensive. He noted that although he deleted the post shortly after making it, it had already been recorded and circulated.

“I acted without thinking, and I wish I could undo my statement. I admit that I have betrayed the trust, confidence, and faith of those who regard me. The disappointment and shame caused by my unfiltered words cannot be erased by apologies alone,” he said.

Daniel emphasized that he has consistently used his platform to advocate against harassment and abuse of the girl child and stressed that he stands firmly against any form of abuse toward women. He also highlighted his eight years of teaching experience prior to joining the NYSC, noting that he had never been accused of misconduct during that time.

In his apology, Daniel extended regret to the NYSC, the Kaduna State Government, Igabi Local Government, women and survivors of abuse offended by his comment, his family, church, community, and both current and former students at his place of primary assignment, Judeen International School, Annex Section Mando, Kaduna.

He concluded by expressing his willingness to cooperate with relevant authorities to clarify the situation and restore his integrity.

“Once again, my sincere apologies to those whom I have failed, but I believe at the end, the truth shall triumph,” Daniel said.
