The Labour Party (LP), through factions loyal to Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti and 2023 presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi, has firmly rejected reports of internal crisis within the Senator Nenadi Usman-led caretaker leadership, describing such claims as baseless and orchestrated by external forces.
Speaking on Sunday, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Prince Tony Akeni, told journalists that allegations of arbitrary removal and replacement of key officers in the interim National Working Committee were completely unfounded.
“We wish to allay rumours claiming there are cracks in the Senator Nenadi Usman council due to alleged arbitrary actions. Such rumours are the handiwork of political jobbers who are uncomfortable with the new era of transparency and due process in the Labour Party,” Akeni said.
He reminded Nigerians that the LP remains unique as the only political party in Africa founded by an institution — the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) — rather than individuals, adding that the party has no place for “totalitarian hallucinations and edicts” that violate its constitution and founding principles.
Akeni also moved to calm nerves in several states where members feared that congress committees and interim state structures were being infiltrated by loyalists of the deposed former National Chairman, Julius Abure, or agents of rival parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We assure genuine members that any attempt to smuggle Trojan horses into our structures under whatever secret settlement will be firmly resisted. Such sabotage aimed at derailing our preparations for the 2027 elections will not see the light of day,” he declared, promising that “time will see off such political herdsmen.”
The party referenced the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which finally affirmed the removal of the Abure-led executive, stating that the LP had permanently closed the chapter on what it called an era of “mega corruption.”
