AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Law & Order actor prevents possible abduction of woman in New Jersey

George Pogatsia, an actor often cast as a villain on shows like “Law & Order” and “The Sopranos,” became a real-life hero when he stopped a potential abduction near his home in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Pogatsia noticed a 19-year-old girl walking with her cousin, both visibly intoxicated, being approached by a man who appeared intent on taking the girl. The suspect, whom Pogatsia said was about 6’2” and dressed in black, reportedly tried to drag the girl down the street. Pogatsia’s wife first spotted the suspicious behavior and alerted him to follow.

When the situation escalated on Bowers Street and the man hoisted the teen onto his shoulder, Pogatsia confronted him, demanding he put her down. On a 911 call, Pogatsia can be heard describing the encounter to the operator, saying the girl and her cousin did not know the man. The suspect eventually dropped the girl and fled, and police arrived shortly afterward. The teen was unharmed, though the man got away. Pogatsia has since been recognized for his bravery, including receiving a letter of appreciation from President Donald Trump. Reflecting on the experience, Pogatsia said, “I usually play a bad guy, but it’s a lot more rewarding to be a real-life good guy.”
