AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Man survives after being shot in the back by dog

SHILLINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA - A 53-year-old man in Shillington, Pennsylvania, is expected to survive after being shot in the lower back by one of his dogs, police said. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Authorities said the man was cleaning his shotgun when one of his dogs jumped onto the bed, causing the gun to discharge. It remains unclear whether the dog’s paw accidentally triggered the weapon, if the safety was off, or if a malfunction occurred. The man was found conscious on the floor when first responders arrived. He was the only adult in the room at the time, though his son was home and two dogs were present.

The man was rushed to the hospital for surgery, and while his current condition is not fully known, police say he is expected to survive. Shillington Police Captain Michael Schoone emphasized firearm safety, reminding residents to always treat guns as loaded and keep fingers off triggers. The shooting is under investigation and has been documented as an accidental incident by the Gun Violence Archive, one of nearly 1,160 unintentional shootings recorded this year.
