Man who charged Ariana Grande at Wicked: For Good premiere deported from Singapore
An Australian man who rushed Ariana Grande during the Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good has been deported after serving a nine-day jail sentence. The city-state’s immigration authority confirmed he has been sent back to Australia and barred from re-entering Singapore.
The incident occurred at Universal Studios Singapore during the film’s opening night, when 26-year-old Johnson Wen jumped a barricade and approached Grande, putting his arm around her. Viral footage showed Grande’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, quickly intervening, placing herself between the two, and shoving Wen away. Security then removed him from the red carpet, and Grande was comforted by Erivo and other cast members.
Wen was arrested hours later and charged with being a public nuisance. A Singapore court sentenced him to nine days in jail, well below the maximum penalty of three months, a fine of $1,500, or both. Wen acknowledged to the court that his actions were wrong and promised not to repeat them.
The judge noted Wen had displayed a pattern of attention-seeking behavior at other global sports events and concerts, suggesting a likelihood of repeating such acts. After the incident, Wen posted a video on Instagram thanking Grande for “letting [him] jump on the Yellow Carpet” with her.
Wicked: For Good was released in the United States on Friday. Grande and Erivo have been closely supportive of each other throughout the movie’s press tours, with Erivo previously stating that they agreed early in production to look out for one another and create a supportive working environment.
