AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. Mayor Prince Chinedu Okafor Leads Sanitation Enforcement Drive Across Awka Capital

In a bold move to uphold environmental hygiene and public health, the Awka-South Sanitation Taskforce, led by Mayor Prince Chinedu Okafor, took to the streets in a sweeping enforcement operation aimed at ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more dignified capital territory.

The operation saw the team:

- Apprehend sanitation defaulters, who were made to sweep streets and clean gutters as corrective measures

- Dismantle illegal shanties obstructing public spaces and drainage systems

- Arrest individuals found in possession of illegal substances

- Seal off of buildings that failed to meet basic sanitation and environmental standards

Speaking during the exercise, Mayor Okafor emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is not optional but essential. “Awka is the face of Anambra State. Every corner of our capital must reflect the dignity, order, and pride of our people,” he stated.

The Mayor reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations and called on residents, business owners, and community leaders to take ownership of their surroundings. The sanitation drive is part of a broader campaign to sustain the gains of the Solution Agenda and position Awka-South as a model for urban cleanliness and civic responsibility.
