 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  POLICING AT SUB-NATIONAL LEVEL: CP ORUTUGU REITERATES THAT POLICING IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY


The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc mnips PhD has continued to contribute to the ongoing discourse on security in Anambra State, stressing that policing is a shared responsibility between the Police and the public. Represented by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Commissioner made this known today 20th November, 2025 at a roundtable discussion themed: “The Nigerian Police and the Challenges of Policing at the Sub-National Level: Is State Police a Viable Option?”. The event was held at the IPBS Boardroom, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.


The roundtable discussion organized by the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies in conjunction with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), had in attendance dignitaries including Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Chiobi Rtd, Special Adviser on Security to the Governor of Anambra State, HRH Igwe P O Omachonu, Prof Amaka Joe-Iguh and other academia, civil society organizations, other participants and the media, all of whom contributed valuable insights on enhancing policing at the sub-national level.


The CP emphasized that effective policing requires trust, cooperation, and active community involvement. He noted that “only through unity of purpose can Anambra achieve sustainable peace and safety,” adding that residents must show greater concern and willingness to collaborate with the Police for improved security service delivery.


The Anambra State Police Command reaffirms its commitment to deepening Community-Police partnerships and strengthening the security architecture of the State.
