AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Russia bombards Ukraine for nearly 10 hours in deadly assault

Russia launched an extensive overnight assault across Ukraine on Saturday, lasting nearly 10 hours and resulting in multiple casualties and widespread damage. Kyiv, the capital, bore the brunt of the attack, with at least two people killed and dozens more injured, as officials responded to fires and aided residents in seven districts shrouded in thick white fog. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed the death toll had risen to three, noting that Russian forces targeted both energy infrastructure and civilian sites.

The assault involved 36 missiles and nearly 600 attack drones, with Kyiv and its surrounding region experiencing the heaviest bombardment. The strikes cut power to more than 600,000 residents in the capital area. Ukrainian officials emphasized that the attack coincided with ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration, which planned meetings with Ukrainian and Russian representatives in an attempt to advance peace talks. Ukraine’s foreign minister highlighted that while international discussions continue, Russia is pursuing what he called its “war plan” of destruction.
