Rescue teams in South Korea are searching for workers trapped after a major structure collapsed at a power plant in Ulsan on Thursday. Authorities report that at least seven people were believed trapped when a 200-foot-tall boiler tower at the Ulsan branch of state-run Korea East-West Power toppled shortly after 2 p.m. local time.
Two workers have been pulled from the rubble, while emergency personnel continue to comb through twisted metal and concrete for others. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok directed all relevant agencies, including the National Fire Agency and Korean National Police, to deploy every available resource to prioritize saving lives and ensure firefighter safety. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung also issued an emergency order to mobilize additional personnel and equipment and dispatched a situation-management officer to coordinate the operation. Photos from the scene show the massive steel tower collapsed on its side, surrounded by crumpled beams and scaffolding. The incident has renewed concerns over industrial safety in South Korea, prompting ongoing calls from President Lee Jae Myung for stricter enforcement and measures to reduce workplace fatalities.
