AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  A Navy vet on his way to friends for Christmas Eve was found deceased inside of his car on Christmas day.

68-year-old Robert Hiller climbed into his blue Toyota Yaris on Christmas Eve, excited to meet up with friends. When he failed to show up that evening and his family had still not heard from him on Christmas Day, a missing persons report was filed.

Sadly, air rescue crews would spot his vehicle partially submerged at 9:45 a.m. on Christmas Day. Robert was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Robert was swept away, along with his vehicle, while on his way to meet with his friends. According to a witness who was driving behind Robert, he had tried to warn him.

Tim Swain says, "I see the waters, and I see him driving into it, and I'm flashing my headlights and high beams, like, No!"

Swain was forced to helplessly watch as Robert was swept away by the raging floodwaters. He said he got out of his car to try to locate Robert but unfortunately he could not find him.

Our thoughts are with the family of Robert Hiller. Please use extreme caution in floodwaters.
