The Amawbia community in Awka South LGA, has elected a new traditional ruler, bringing to an end the interregnum that followed the transition of the late HRH, Igwe Chinyelu Nnaemeke Nworah- Molokwu in 2022.
Following a peaceful and keenly contested election held on December 27, 2025, at Eziokpaligwe Square, Nze Uche Sunday Okonkwo emerged as the new Okpaligwe Amawbia, securing 324 votes. He narrowly defeated Engr. David Raluchukwu Okeke, who polled 321 votes, in what was widely described as a highly competitive and transparent process.
Other contestants included: Nze Joseph Muo– 55 votes, Nze (Barr.) Onyeka Ifesi – 54 votes, Nze (Dr.) Emeka Obi– 45 votes and Nze Ndubuisi Okonkwo– 36 votes.
The election drew a large turnout of Ndi Amawbia, particularly members of Mezie to Ebube age grades, underscoring the communal importance of the revered Okpaligwe stool.
Officials from the Local Government and Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, security agencies, and the media were on ground to monitor proceedings, ensuring a smooth, credible, and peaceful process.
One of the Okpaligwe contestants, Nze Barr. Onyeka Ifesi, reflected on the significance of the election, saying:
"Today’s election carries two powerful meanings: First, God crowns whom He wills. Second, the people, despite all the money thrown around, stood their ground and made a wise, independent choice.
"I had prayed for a peaceful and credible election, and I’m grateful to God that we now have a leader who truly identifies with Amawbia people. We will stand by the Igwe-elect in every circumstance, even in the heat of battle because his success is Amawbia’s success.
"I’m genuinely happy for him. He deserves this and has the capacity to drive real progress in our community."
Nze Chukwukadibia Odumodu, President General of Amawbia Town Union, expressed deep gratitude to God for the peaceful, transparent, and hitch-free election that produced the new Okpaligwe Amawbia.
He extended heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, the security agencies, the electoral committee, and all stakeholders whose efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the historic election.
Nze Odumodu prayed that the reign of Nze Uche Okonkwo as Okpaligwe Amawbia would usher in an era of peace, unity, and accelerated development for the community. He called on all sons and daughters of Amawbia to rally around the new traditional ruler in the spirit of progress and collective responsibility.
Hon. Olisaemeka Nworah, Deputy President General of Amawbia Town Union, expressed joy over the successful Igwe election. He commended the massive turnout of Amawbia indigenes, both at home and abroad, saying it was heartwarming to see the people actively participate in shaping their leadership.
“I’m truly overjoyed that all the plans for the election came to fruition. I deeply appreciate the dedication and hard work that made today a success,” he said.
He prayed for the new Igwe-elect, asking God to bless him with wisdom, protect him from all harm, and grant his reign the grace to bring lasting peace and progress to Amawbia.
Ozo Rapuluchukwu Nwonu, Isiozo Umukabia said, "I’m grateful for today’s historic event. God, heaven, and earth have chosen a king for Amawbia. I urge everyone to support and work with the new Igwe for the progress of our community. This victory is for all of Amawbia, not just one person. I pray for the good of our people, the Osojeze, PG, all men, women, and the government that made this election possible. Long live Amawbia!"
Engr. Arinze Obukaibie from Ngene Village, Umuoneli kindred, Amawbia, expressed joy over the emergence of the new Igwe-elect, noting that among the six contestants, Nze Uche Okonkwo emerged victorious, and being from his kindred makes the win even more special.
“I had already resolved to support whoever emerged as the winner, and I’m glad it turned out to be someone from my kindred. I prayed for God’s wisdom and guidance upon the Igwe-elect to lead Amawbia with vision, peace, and unity."
Mr. Chijioke Nwolisa from Umueze Village, a member of the Amawbia Town Union Cultural Committee, described the election as long-anticipated and brotherly, noting that the process was smooth, and the winner truly earned the mandate through grassroots support and hard work, thanking all who came from near and far to participate in the historic event.
Mr. Anayo Okonkwo from Umukabia said, "Today’s election was free, fair, and transparent. I prayed for God to entrust the throne to one who will truly serve the people. I urge all the candidates to join hands and work together for the progress and unity of our community."
With this development, Amawbia looks forward to a new chapter under the leadership of Okpaligwe-elect Nze Uche Okonkwo.
