‎Anambra SDP hails Supreme Court judgment on party leadership

‎The Social Democratic Party, Anambra State chapter, has hailed the Supreme Court decision dismissing the appeal filed by the Independent National Electoral Commission challenging the party’s leadership.

‎In a statement on Saturday, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Uche Obi, said the victory confirmed that the state chapter was standing on solid and unimpeachable legal grounds.

‎Recall that the Supreme Court, on Friday, dismissed an appeal filed by INEC challenging the leadership of the SDP, describing the case as lacking merit and purely academic.

‎In a unanimous decision, the apex court also awarded a cost of N2m against INEC’s counsel.

‎INEC had approached the Supreme Court to overturn the October 17 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, which affirmed a ruling of the Federal High Court compelling the electoral body to recognise and include SDP candidates in by-elections conducted across 12 states of the federation.

‎Reacting to the development, Obi said the ruling had proven the SDP to be a party driven by purpose and commitment to democratic norms.

‎According to him, those who used INEC’s illegal adventurism to question the legitimacy of the party’s state executive committee should swallow their pride and accord due recognition to the executive led by Chinedu Ekwunife.

‎The party spokesman added that Ekwunife was repositioning the SDP as a platform for true democrats determined to make a difference in the 2027 general elections.
