AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. Anglican Bishop Demands Probe as Naval Officer Allegedly Beats and injures Anglican Priest at a checkpoint in Anambra

The Anglican Bishop of Ogbaru Diocese, Rt Rev Prosper Amah, has asked the Chief of Naval Staff to investigate the alleged assault of an Anglican priest at a checkpoint in Anambra State. The incident reportedly happened on November 30 at Okpotouno in Ogbaru LGA.

The bishop said the priest, Revd Tochukwu Agina, was attacked “under a false allegation that he was making a phone call at the checkpoint.” He added that eyewitnesses confirmed the priest was not using a phone. “Credible eyewitness accounts and the victim’s testimony confirm that the priest was not making any call at the time,” he wrote.

Amah described the naval officer’s action as “not only an abuse of authority but a clear violation of fundamental human rights.” He insisted that “no circumstance justifies brutality, false accusation, or the dehumanisation of any Nigerian citizen.”

He called for a full investigation and disciplinary action, saying, “Justice for one citizen is justice for all.” The Nigerian Navy has not yet responded to the allegation at the time of this report.
