CZECH BILLIONAIRE ANDREJ BABIŠ TAKES OFFICE AS PRIME MINISTER. (PHOTO)

Czech billionaire Andrej Babiš takes office as prime minister

Populist billionaire Andrej Babiš was sworn in Tuesday as the Czech Republic’s prime minister, marking his return to power following October’s parliamentary election. Babiš, who led the country from 2017 to 2021, pledged to prioritize Czech interests domestically and internationally and to work toward making the nation “the best place for life on earth.”

President Petr Pavel administered the oath after Babiš’s ANO (YES) movement secured a decisive victory in the October 3-4 vote and agreed to form a majority coalition with two smaller parties: the anti-migrant Freedom and Direct Democracy party and the right-wing Motorists for Themselves. The coalition will have a 16-member Cabinet, with ANO holding eight posts plus the prime minister’s office, the Motorists four, and the Freedom party three. Together, they hold 108 of the 200 seats in the lower house, pushing the former pro-Western, center-right government led by Petr Fiala into opposition.

The full Cabinet’s appointment is pending, but the coalition is expected to shift government policies, including a reduced stance on supporting Ukraine in Russia’s ongoing conflict and a more critical approach toward the European Union, particularly regarding environmental and migration policies.

Babiš, 71, continues to face EU subsidy-related fraud charges, with the parliament required to lift his immunity before a court can rule. After losing the 2021 election, he was defeated by Pavel in the presidential vote.

To address conflicts of interest, Babiš announced he would divest control of his major businesses. His Agrofert conglomerate, which includes around 200 companies, will be placed under an independent trustee and overseen by a protector until his death, after which it will pass to his heirs. Babiš also owns a network of clinics and labs, with a close ANO ally nominated as the new health minister.
