AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

Gunmen Reportedly Attack Ugom Community Village After Church Service In Southern Kaduna

Suspected terrorists on Sunday, December 28, 2025, attacked Iwhoshro (Unguwar Rogo), a village in Ugom Community, Maro Ward of Kajuru Local Government Area, Southern Kaduna State, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.

According to a press statement issued by the Ugom Progressive Union, the attack occurred a few hours after church services, when residents had returned home and were settling into their homes. The assailants reportedly arrived in large numbers on about ten motorcycles, each carrying three armed men.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that all the attackers were armed with guns and immediately began shooting sporadically upon entering the village, causing panic among residents. Women, children, and the elderly were forced to flee in different directions to escape the gunfire.

As of the time the statement was released, no fatalities had been confirmed. However, two women remain missing, including a nursing mother who reportedly abandoned her infant while fleeing in fear.

The community has expressed deep concern over their whereabouts and safety.

The attackers were also said to have made away with five motorcycles belonging to residents, while another motorcycle was set ablaze.

The statement stated that the incident has further worsened the economic hardship faced by already vulnerable villagers.

The Ugom Progressive Union recalled that the same community was attacked earlier on January 1, 2025, during which an ECWA church, several houses, and the pastorium were burnt. The incident reportedly left many residents displaced, and nearly a year later, the church is yet to be rebuilt.

Chairman of the Ugom Progressive Union, Onnusim Alhaji Ishaya, said the community has endured repeated attacks for more than a decade and continues to live in fear and uncertainty.

He called on the government to urgently deploy adequate security personnel to the area and to take concrete steps to protect lives and property.

The union urged authorities to reassess claims that peace has returned to the area, stressing the need for immediate intervention to restore confidence among residents of Ugom Community.
