 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. IMO STATE POLICE COMMAND HAVE ARRESTED A 43- YEAR-OLD KELECHI NWOSU OF UMUOBI UMUKAM IN OBOLLO COMMUNITY, ISIALA MBANO, FOR ALLEGEDLY DEFILING HIS SEVEN-YEAR-OLD NIECE.(PHOTO).


 The Imo State police command have arrested a 43- year-old Kelechi Nwosu of Umuobi Umukam in Obollo Community, Isiala Mbano, for allegedly defiling his seven-year-old niece.


The suspect was arrested by his kinsmen and handed over to the Police at Isiala Mbano Divisional Headquarters from where he was taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Owerri.


The incident was brought to the public domain through the effort of a human rights organization, 'Stand For Humanity Foundation' who escalated the matter and led to the arrest of the suspect.


The group’s Coordinator Chidiebube Okeoma, disclosed that the organization collaborated with the suspect’s kinsmen to effect his arrest, and informed that medical investigations carried out at the Police clinic in Owerri revealed that the child was abused.


A statement made by the minor revealed that the suspect defied her on two separate occasions when everyone had left the home for the farm.


The organization commended the youth of the Community for demonstrating that they are true apostles of justice, and urged other communities in the state and beyond to emulate the youths of Obollo in fighting child abuses in the society.


The organization also commended the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal and Investigations Department Owerri, for the professional commitment he deployed since the incident was reported to him.


The Spokesperson for the Police in the State, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of the investigations by the command.
