More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.  Lack of Mentorship Threatens Growth In Southern Kaduna, Youth Leader Warns — Urges Southern Kaduna Politicians To Create Mentorship Culture

A youth leader in Southern Kaduna has called on established politicians in the region to adopt a more inclusive and accessible approach to political mentorship, stressing the need for stronger support structures for emerging leaders.

Comrade Ishaya Ezra, who currently serves as the Executive CMC Chairman of NANCES Kaduna State Axis and Secretary General of the NYMEF Kaduna State Chapter, expressed concern over what he described as the growing difficulty young leaders face in securing engagement with senior political figures.

According to him, many upcoming leaders are making efforts to connect with experienced politicians but are often met with silence, a situation he says is slowing political growth and weakening leadership development in the region.

“What makes them quality leaders is their ability to give listening ears to their constituents, especially the upcoming leaders,” he noted, emphasizing that mentorship and accessibility are essential traits of effective leadership.

“We need guidance, experience, and support to grow and succeed. Other zones are excelling because their leaders prioritize mentorship. Southern Kaduna can achieve the same if we create a culture of inclusivity and growth,” Ishaya said.

He urged senior political figures to take deliberate steps toward nurturing emerging leaders by being more accessible, offering mentorship, and creating opportunities for young people to learn and participate meaningfully in governance.

Ishaya also emphasized the moral responsibility of leadership, reminding political actors that positions of influence are blessings that come with accountability.
