 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. PERRY BAMONTE, LONGTIME GUITARIST AND KEYBOARDIST FOR THE CURE, HAS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 65 FOLLOWING A SHORT ILLNESS AT HOME OVER CHRISTMAS.(PHOTO).


 Perry Bamonte, longtime guitarist and keyboardist for The Cure, has passed away at the age of 65 following a short illness at home over Christmas.


Born in London on September 3, 1960, he joined the band's circle in 1984 as a roadie and later became Robert Smith's guitar technician before becoming a full member in 1990. He contributed to albums including Wish (1992), Wild Mood Swings (1996), Bloodflowers (2000), and The Cure (2004), performing in hundreds of shows during his 14-year tenure until 2005.


He rejoined The Cure in 2022 for the Shows of a Lost World tour, playing dozens of concerts up to their final show in London on November 1, 2024. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2019.The band remembered him as "quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative," affectionately known as "Teddy," and a warm-hearted vital part of their story.
