AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. TikTok Shop introduces digital gift cards to compete with Amazon and eBay

TikTok Shop has launched a new digital gift card feature, allowing users to send funds that friends and family can use to purchase from the app’s millions of products.

The feature debuted during the holiday season, a critical period for TikTok Shop as it seeks to strengthen its presence in e-commerce. The move brings the platform closer to competing with established giants like Amazon and eBay, both of which offer gift card options. TikTok Shop has also been expanding into luxury retail to further solidify its market position.

Gift cards can be loaded with values ranging from $10 to $500 and offer customizable animated designs for occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and thank-you messages. Cards are sent via email, and recipients must have a TikTok account to redeem them. Once redeemed, the amount is credited to the recipient’s TikTok Balance, and they can respond with a thank-you note or even send a gift card in return. Currently, the feature is only available in the U.S.

TikTok plans to expand the personalization options by early 2026, allowing users to attach recorded or uploaded video messages to their digital gift cards. The platform also hinted at an “interactive unboxing” experience to capture recipients’ reactions, though details remain limited.

The launch follows TikTok Shop’s recent success over Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when the app generated more than $500 million in U.S. sales. Despite this growth, TikTok Shop’s future in the U.S. remains uncertain as a potential sale to an American investor group looms. If the sale does not go through, the app could face a ban, with the current deadline for resolution extended to January 23, 2026.
