AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. Trump, Zelenskyy set to talk with European leaders ahead of summit

Ahead of their in-person meeting on Sunday, President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are set to hold a conference call with European leaders on Saturday, a Ukrainian official confirmed.
The call aims to update allies on the latest developments in their peace proposals to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, with a joint news conference tentatively planned.
Despite ongoing peace efforts, Russia struck Ukraine’s capital early Saturday with missiles and drones, killing one person and injuring 27.
Zelenskyy said Friday that a 20-point peace plan is about 90% complete and that he had discussions over Christmas with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Key issues still to be resolved include security guarantees to prevent future Russian aggression and the status of disputed territories.
Posting on X, Zelenskyy wrote, “We are not losing a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level with President Trump in the near future. A lot can be decided before the new year. Glory to Ukraine.”
