Two Arrested and Illicit Cigarettes Worth R180 000 Seized in Tzaneen

A well-coordinated anti-smuggling operation by the Limpopo Tracking Team, working with Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Shadow Secure Security, has led to the arrest of two suspects and the confiscation of illicit cigarettes valued at about R180 000.

Intelligence was received about two white Toyota Corolla Quest vehicles transporting Remington Gold cigarettes from Musina to Tzaneen. The teams immediately set up an observation plan along the R36 route.

The vehicles were later spotted heading towards the Tzaneen industrial area. When officers attempted to stop them, both drivers sped off towards the Tzaneen Sasol garage. A chase followed, and the suspects were cornered near the Sasol Industrial area.

A search of the vehicles revealed that both were loaded with illicit Remington Gold cigarettes. Two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 37 and 48, were arrested on the scene.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teamwork between police and private security partners, noting that such cooperation continues to disrupt criminal activities and protect the province’s economy.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on 2 December 2025 on charges of possession of illicit cigarettes.
